Japan weather is classified as temperate, with four distinct seasons, thanks to the country’s position in the appropriate zone. One of the main characteristics of weather in Japan is the fluctuation experienced between different seasons:,weather conditions vary from cool in the north to subtropical in the south. Japan is a country with an abundant amount of precipitation and high humidity levels. In northern Japan the summers are long and warm but the winters are cold with heavy snowfall. Central Japan experiences sizzling, humid summers with short winters. Japan weather in the southwestern region boasts long, hot, humid summers with mild winters.
The weather in Japan is affected by two chief reasons, one is the location of Japan along the Pacific Ocean and the second is the existence of major oceanic currents. Two major ocean currents that influence the weather in Japan are the Kuroshio Current, and more specifically a current that flows northbound along the Pacific side of Japan warming regions as far north as Tokyo. The second current is the Oyashio which flourishes in plankton that benefits coldwater fish and flows southward along the northern Pacific Ocean, cooling neighboring coastal areas. The gathering point of these currents stands at 36 north latitude and it is a bountiful fishing ground.
Japan weather patterns are intercepted by roughly five or six typhoons per year during, most commonly occurring during early August and Early September. Understandably, with these typhoons come furious rainstorms and considerable damage. The majority of the annual precipitation falls between the months of June through to September and averages 1,000 and 2,000 mm.
Spring
Japan weather during spring is characterized by warm days and little rainfall. During March and April the cherry trees are in full bloom and all the festivities are on, making this a favorable season for both visitors and locals.
Summer
Summer weather in Japan is distinctively hot and wet in June turning into a sultry steam bath in July and August. These weather conditions are due to the tropical airflows passing in from the Pacific Ocean and Southeast Asia. These airflows carry abundant amounts of moisture and deposit extensive amounts of precipitation when they reach the land. June marks the beginning of the wet season which lasts for about two months in total, followed by hot muggy weather. Temperature can reach as high as a rather sizzling 40°C.
Autumn
Autumn weather in Japan begins as September rolls in, sharing similar patterns with sprong. Temperatures start to ease making the weather more tolerable. Warm sunny days are common and the array of autumn colors is as impressive as the cherry blossoms. Early autumn also experiences typhoons, due to tropical depressions created nearer to the equator.
Winter
Japan weather during winter experiences freezing temperatures; this is due to a high pressure area developing over Siberia and a low pressure area developing over the northern Pacific Ocean, resulting in cold airflow eastward across Japan. With the freezing temperatures comes the heavy snowfall on the central mountain ranges facing the Sea of Japan. Regions facing the Pacific Ocean are graced with clear skies.
